What is Saving a Project?

A School Sounds project keeps every track together in one .sounds file, with each track kept separate so you can carry on editing later. Saving is how you keep your work — always save before you close the app or open something else.

How to Save

Press Save

The first window asks where you want to save: this device or an available cloud account.

Choose the destination

Choose This Device, Google Drive or OneDrive. Cloud choices are shown when you are signed in.

Name and confirm

The final window shows the chosen destination. Check the suggested name, change it if needed, then press the final Save button.

Quick Save & Auto-save

Quick Save

After a Google Drive or OneDrive project has a save location, press Save or use Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on Mac) to update the same file immediately.

Choose Somewhere Else

Use Ctrl+Shift+S (Cmd+Shift+S on Mac), or the full save choice in the Save window, to choose a different name or destination.

Auto-save

After the first cloud save, Auto-save starts switched on and periodically updates the project when you pause after making changes.

Auto-save Icon

The icon beside Save is green when Auto-save is on, grey when it is off, and blue while a save is in progress. Click it to switch Auto-save on or off.

Where You Can Save

Save to Your Device

Save the project file straight to your computer, tablet or phone. No internet needed, and you keep full control of the file.

Save to Google Drive

Keep your project in Google Drive so you can open it from any device. Sign in first.

Save to OneDrive

Keep your project in Microsoft OneDrive for backup and easy access. Sign in first.

The Project File

All your tracks, kept separate

When you save, School Sounds bundles every track and its version history into one project file. Because the tracks stay separate inside it, you can open the project later and keep editing each track on its own — nothing is mixed together.

To make a single mixed sound file to share or play elsewhere, use Export as WAV instead. To save just one part of a track, use Save a Selection.

Handy Tips!

• Watch the Auto-save icon: Green means it is protecting the current cloud project; grey means it is switched off.

• Name it clearly: A name like "Class Song" or "My Story" makes projects easy to find later.

• Keep milestones: Use Version History to save and restore important stages without making lots of separately named files.

Important!

• Cloud saving needs an internet connection and you must be signed in.

• Device downloads usually go to your Downloads folder.

• A WAV export is a finished mix — you can play it, but you can't split it back into separate tracks. Keep the project file for editing.

Common Questions

What is the difference between Save and Export?

Save keeps a project file with all your tracks separate for future editing. Export makes one mixed WAV sound file to share or play anywhere.

Where did my project save to?

Device saves usually go to your Downloads folder. Cloud saves go to your Google Drive or OneDrive.

Why did Save update my file without asking for a name?

Quick Save is available once a cloud project has an existing destination. Use Ctrl+Shift+S (Cmd+Shift+S on Mac) when you want to choose somewhere else.

Does Auto-save work for device downloads?

No. Browsers cannot silently replace a downloaded file, so Auto-save and Quick Save are for projects stored in Google Drive or OneDrive.

Can I open my project on another computer?

Yes. Save it to the cloud, or copy the project file across, then use the Open tool.

What characters can I use in the name?

Letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens and underscores all work. A few special symbols are removed automatically to keep the file safe.
