What is the Record Tool?

The Record tool lets you make your own sounds using your device's microphone. Sing, speak, clap or play an instrument, and School Sounds turns it into a new track you can play, edit and save.

Quick Start

Choose the Record tool

Click the microphone in the toolbar on the left.

Allow the microphone

The first time, your browser will ask if School Sounds can use your microphone. Choose Allow.

Press Record

Press the record button and start making your sound. A timer shows how long you have been recording.

Press Stop

Press stop when you are finished. Your recording becomes a new track, ready to play.

Choosing a Microphone

If your device has more than one microphone — for example a built-in one and a headset — you can pick which one to use before you record. All the microphones your device offers appear once you have given permission.

Handy Tips!

• Find a quiet spot: Less background noise means a clearer recording.

• Not too close: Hold the microphone a little way from your mouth to avoid popping sounds.

• Do a test: Record a few seconds and play it back to check it sounds good before doing a long take.

• Tidy it up: Use the Edit Audio tool to trim any silence from the start or end.

Good to Know

• If you don't see the microphone question, check that your browser is allowed to use the microphone in its settings.

• Recording only works while you have given permission. You can turn it off again any time in your browser settings.

• Your recording stays on your device until you choose to save it.

Common Questions

Why is my recording silent?

Check that the right microphone is chosen and that it isn't muted. Try recording a short test to see the sound wave appear.

Can I record over a track?

Each recording makes a new track, so your other tracks stay safe. You can then play them all together.

How long can I record?

You can record for as long as you need. Very long recordings use more of your device's memory, so keep an eye on that on older devices.
