Mark part of a track, then trim, copy or rename it

What is the Edit Audio Tool?

The Edit Audio tool lets you change the sound in a track. You mark a part of the track — this is called a selection — and then you can keep just that part, copy it, delete it, or save it on its own. You can also give each track a name here.

Quick Start

Choose the Edit Audio tool

Click the Edit tool in the toolbar. The first track is chosen for you automatically.

Mark a selection

Drag across the sound wave to highlight the part you want. The highlighted part is your selection.

Choose what to do

Use the buttons in the panel at the bottom to trim, copy, delete or save your selection.

Marking a Selection

There are two ways to mark the part of a track you want to work with:

Drag on the wave

Press down at the start and drag to the end. The blue highlight shows your selection.

Use the paddles

Drag the round handles on the left and right of the selection to make it bigger or smaller.

The scrubber panel

The slider panel above the track lets you move through a zoomed-in track using the mouse, keyboard or a touch screen.

Keyboard friendly

The selection panel works with the keyboard too, so you can edit without a mouse.

What You Can Do

Trim
Keep only the selected part and remove everything else from the track.
Delete
Remove the selected part and join the rest together. If you Select All first, Delete asks you to confirm before removing the whole track.
Copy
Copy the selected sound so you can use it again. Your recent copies are kept in the clipboard history.
Save Selection
Save just the selected part as its own sound file. See the Save a Selection page.
Rename the track
Give the track a name in the Edit panel so you always know what each track is.

Handy Tips!

• Zoom in first: Use the Zoom tool to make the wave bigger so it is easier to mark exactly the right spot.

• Made a mistake? Use Undo to go back a step — nothing is ever lost.

• Name your tracks: A clear name like "Drums" or "My Voice" makes a big project much easier.

• Remove a whole track: Choose Select All, press Delete, then confirm that you want to delete the track.

Common Questions

Why can't I see the edit buttons?

You need to mark a selection first. Drag across the sound wave and the buttons will become active.

The selection is too small — what happened?

A selection needs to be at least a tiny bit long. If it is too short, mark a slightly bigger area.

Will editing change my saved file?

No. Editing only changes the track you are working on right now. Your saved files stay the same until you save again.
